Inexpensive Raised Garden Bed. I've read about the joys of raised garden beds when you have poor soil to grow vegetables in. Then I looked at the price of ready-made raised beds and was like, "No way am I spending that kind of money on a 4 inch high, 4'x4' bed!"
So, I created an alternative. It's not the prettiest of beds. But it's functional and...budget-friendly.
I experimented with the cinder block bed last season to see if it was an adequate alternative to the beds sold online and at garden centers. Depending on what kind of soil/weed issues you have, this project may be tweaked.
In my case, I learned that is necessary to use a strong commercial weed blocker due to aggressive Bermuda grass. I hope you don't have weeds with strong rhizomes in your yard!
Construction blocks (As many as you need to make the bed you want.)
Weed blocker (Preferably something strong and long-lasting if you have difficult weeds.)
Soil (I use cheap topsoil in the bottom and mix it with peat moss. Then I add the more expensive pre-mixed vegetable garden soil on top.)
